Panther Hunt

We already know the Hoggs had a penchant for exotic animals and odd entertainment from their ostrich pets Jack and Jill, but a tale of James Hogg’s panther hunts was more surprising. According to Ed Kilman, Hogg invited guests to hunt an imported panther. The hunt was for sport, and the panther was caught and caged at the end, but not without some dramatics. Most of the dogs were afraid of the big cat, but one dog, Sport, who belonged to Wayne Cartledge, was bolder. He engaged the panther in a fight, and his life was narrowly spared by one of the hunters. James Hogg then adopted Cartledge’s Sport, and later established a kennel at Varner Plantations for other hunting dogs.
